April 18 – Day 5 action and livestream from British Swimming Olympic Trials for the Covid-delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The venue: the 2012 Olympics’ London Aquatics Centre. This morning from 10am local time, the livestream below will have coverage of the heats of the following events (finals for which get underway at 7pm local time): 

Day 5 Heats: Women’s 100m breaststroke; Men’s 200m backstroke; Women’s 50m freestyle; Men’s 200m freestyle; slower heats of – : Men’s 1500m freestyle; Women’s 1500m freestyle.

Qualifiers for Day 5 finals:

Women’s 100m breaststroke: The target time is 1:06.79. Sarah Vasey came closest this morning on 1:07.03, with 200m winner Molly Renshaw on 1:07.26.

Men’s 200m backstroke: World-Championships bronze medallist Luke Greenbank tested his morning speed with a solid 1:56.95 in readiness for the morning speed he will need at the Tokyo Olympics, courtesy of FINA’s weakness on the matter of allowing NBC TV to act as a colonial overlord of scheduling in order to suit American audiences. Target time: 1:56.60.

Women’s 50m freestyle: the morning after Tokyo 2020 cut in 100 free, Anna Hopkin rippled out a 24.81 to stamp her ticket to lane 4 for the dash showdown.

Men’s 200m freestyle: Tom Dean set the pace at 1:46.68 in the first heat, Joe Litchfield on 1:47.14, before Matt Richards, 18, took down James Guy‘s British age record in 1:46.73 ahead of Guy, on 1:46.77 and Cameron Kurle, 1:47.19, in heat 2. Then came Duncan Scott, with a ticket to lane 4 on 1:46.41 ahead of Calum Jarvis and Max Litchfield, on 1:46.89 and 1:47.93, that slamming the door to what looks set to be a searing final. The Trials will end with smoke rising off the water this evening … and beyond this season, there’s Jacob Whittle, Kieran Bird and others there to take up the 4x200m challenge that transcends the four men who will stand up at the Olympics for Britain…
